MDiTV News: The Treatment of High Cholesterol is Evolving

www.mditv.com — A time may be coming when medication isn’t the default treatment for high cholesterol. A study from the University of Michigan encourages physicians to look at several factors before prescribing statins, and suggests that knowing a person’s overall heart attack risk is more important than just knowing their cholesterol level. “LDL cholesterol alone explains just nine percent of an individual’s risk of cardiovascular events, and sufficient attention is not given to the remaining 91 percent,” says Dr. Rodney Hayward, lead researcher of the study. The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, worked with more than four thousand patients and calls this approach of looking at a patient’s overall heart attack risk “tailored treatment”. In this type of treatment, if high cholesterol was a young patient’s only risk factor, changes in diet and exercise would be considered better options than medication. This is thought to improve a patient’s quality of life because statins can have unpleasant side effects like muscle aches as well as affects on the liver.
